Expenses

Statement on Expenses

When I was first elected in 2001, there was a requirement that if you ever became a minister your London home automatically became your main home. As this involved no extra cost to the taxpayer I was happy to act on this advice, as my mortgage interests costs would have been identical had they been on my London home. It is expensive and difficult to transfer a mortgage. Although I am not a minister, I am a shadow minister and electoral fortunes can change.

I have never claimed for furniture, food (apart from one meal costing under £3 in 8 years), cleaning or gardening. My claims were for mortgage interest and some council tax or utility bills and one maintenance bill in five years. I have always told the local press what my claims were for and have put all my claims and mortgage interest statement on my website.

I have only ever owned a London and a south Bedfordshire home and no others. I have maintained my London home throughout at my own expense and in addition briefly paid at my own expense for accommodation when I had to move out of my London home. I told the fees office where I was living at all times. My only change of home designation was done in March this year, for a two month period, to reduce my expenses when I was able to pay off my mortgage capital and interest with my own money. I was reimbursed for London living expenses for two months only and now no longer claim any second home costs and never will again, ever, even though I will continue to stay in London at my own expense, when kept there very late on a regular basis.

I have sold no property and will pay all tax due if I do. I employ no members of my family and am a full time MP with no outside interests. My overall expenses are 424th out of 646 MPs (so 423 have higher costs than me) and this is despite a very high postage bill due to taking up many constituents’ cases, which I will continue to do. I also do not pay my staff poverty wages. I commit to reduce the total costs of running my office further.

My expenses [along with all Conservative MPs] have been fully investigated by a Conservative party scrutiny panel with independent members on it. I have been cleared by the scrutiny panel and not asked to repay any money.

Sir Thomas Legg’s review team established by the Prime Minister has concluded that all my expenses were in order and that no repayment is necessary.

My monthly claims from my administrative and office allowances and from my communications allowance are published monthly on the Conservative party website www.conservatives.com on my personal biography page.
